Animal Care Assistant

Responsibilities;

– Day to day care of animals on site including dogs, cats, small animals & exotics, cleaning of accommodation, grooming, feeding, exercise, and administering medication if required.

– Ensuring animal welfare needs are met on a daily basis

– Ensuring animals receive appropriate enrichment for their specific needs.

– Exercising dogs via walking & use of outside exercise areas.

– Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness & hygiene on site, to the animal accommodation, food preparation, laundry, store areas, staff & volunteer facilities and ensure buildings/exercise areas are always secure.

– Carrying out health checks on animals and reporting any concerns & feedback to the management team.

– Assisting with Behaviour Plans by observing behavioural changes & recording & reporting to the Senior animal handler.

– Assisting with carrying out on-going assessments for animals at the Centre under the direction of the senior animal handler & management team.

– Working alongside, supporting, and guiding Volunteers and Work Experience students

– Keeping animal records accurate in files & systems.

– Working to Centre protocols to maintain high standards of presentation throughout the centre.

– Being responsible for their own health and safety.

– To undertake any other duties required by the Management team

Requirements

  • Minimum Level 2 qualification in animal or other related qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years proven experience in the animal care industry
  • Excellent applied knowledge of canine/ feline behaviour
  • Excellent customer service skills

Shift pattern

  • 36 hours per week. Rotational basis to be discussed at interview
  • Including weekends/Bank holidays on rotation

Full job description

Job Summary:

An exciting opportunity to join our established team of animal professionals. In this role you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of our kennels and cattery (mainly concentrating on boarding along with an element of rescue). You will be working closely, alongside our Welfare Animal Supervisor. This role ensures the welfare and health of all of our four legged customers. You will be maintaining facility compliance with health and safety standards, and coordinate with our veterinary team/trainers and administrative teams. You will play a key role in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment for both our lovely animals and and our amazing team.

Job Description

  • Supervise and schedule daily activities of animal care employees
  • Organizing workflow and ensuring all employees understand their duties and delegated tasks
  • Ensure proper feeding, cleaning, and handling procedures for all animals on site.
  • Monitor the health and behaviour of animals; report abnormalities and coordinate with our veterinary team.
  • Preparing and delivering animal feeds where required
  • Administrating medication where required
  • Assisting with the duties of the animal care assistants where required
  • Ensuring policies and procedures regarding the health and care of the animals and cleanliness of the site are followed by the site team
  • Train new staff and volunteers on animal care procedures and facility policies.
  • Delegate tasks and monitoring progress and completion
  • Setting goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with the company’s plans and vision
  • Monitoring employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching where required
  • Implement and enforce safety and sanitation protocols.
  • Communicate with management regarding facility needs, staffing, or animal welfare issues.
  • Assist in developing and improving operational procedures.
  • Maintain detailed records of animal care, treatment, and facility operations

Qualifications

  • Relevant qualification in Animal Care, (Level 2 or above).
  • Animal First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Management or leadership training/certification.Experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with animals, preferably in a supervisory or senior role.
  • Experience in managing a team or volunteers. Previous supervisory or leadership experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with animal welfare standards and regulations (e.g. RSPCA guidelines).

Knowledge

  • Good understanding of animal husbandry, enrichment, health and safety.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment, disease control, and record-keeping practices.
  • Strong knowledge of animal behaviour, health, and safety standards.

Skills

  • Excellent leadership, communication and problem-solving skills..
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to handle animals confidently and safely.
  • Competent in using IT systems for scheduling, reporting, and animal records.
  • Ability to handle physically demanding work including lifting, cleaning, and prolonged periods on feet.

Personal Qualities

  • Compassionate and patient with a strong commitment to animal and human welfare.
  • Proactive, reliable, and able to work effectively under pressure.
  • Flexible and willing to work weekends or outside normal hours if required.
  • Physically fit for a hands-on, active role.

Hours;

8am -5/30pm (Finish time dependant on day)

38 per week

Alternate weekends

Salary;

Staring salary of £30,000 (Dependant on experience)
